Hi everyone. I’m Denny. This is my first post on here.
When I first came to Japan from Adelaide, Australia, I wanted a sandwich. Normally in Australia I could go to a sandwich shop and I could choose from many different things to have on it.
I arrived in Japan and thought to myself that I really want a ham and cheese sandwich. I went to the convenience store and bought one. At the time I thought, well it’s just ham and cheese, the way it should be. Unfortunately I was wrong. It had mayonnaise on it.
I took a bite and wondered why it tasted different than normal. That was when I realised that it had mayonnaise on it. I couldn’t eat it. Usually if you buy a sandwich in Australia that comes from a convenience store it says ham, cheese and mayonnaise. This one didn’t.
Now with mayonnaise, I don’t mind a little bit sometimes. Now after living in Japan for a year now, I have noticed that almost everything here has either mayonnaise or some type of sauce on it. I don’t understand why.
We went to Subway one time here and they had a set sandwich menu. Where I come from, Subway asks you what you want on your sandwich just like many other sandwich places. I wanted a bacon and egg Subway roll and it had mayonnaise on it. I didn’t want that on it. In Australia you can choose what you want on your roll. It was strange to me.
One day we went to a popular lunch place here in Nagoya and I ordered Tonkatsu and salad expecting maybe a vinegar dressing. When it came to our table it had mayonnaise dressing and potato salad on top. I was confused as that’s double the amount of mayonnaise.
The next time we went there for lunch I asked for no dressing, mayonnaise or potato salad. The waitress looked at me weirdly and said “Okay, but only for this one time.” I was confused again as if there’s no mayonnaise, dressing or potato salad on it, wouldn’t that make it less work for them.
Now everytime we go to eat, it is very hard to find a place to eat that has food with no mayonnaise on it.
Thank you for reading my post.
One confused Australian.
” Aha! This is really Osaka” なんで大阪土産とわかったの？
Hi! I’m Cindy.
Baseball and colors I once brought back souvenirs from Osaka and I shared it with my students.
One of the students said to me with excitements ” Aha! This is really Osaka” and pointed to the packages with yellow and black stripes and a picture of okonomiyaki on it.
I was confused and asked him what was that. He told me Nagoya’s is blue and Tokyo’s one is orange and black. I didn’t know that those colors refer to something. Can you guess what it is?
I am sure most of you who love baseball might understand! Yes! Those colors refer to baseball teams in Japan! The famous one in Osaka is Hanshin Tigers whereas in Nagoya is Chuunichi Dragons which is blue and Tokyo is Yomiuri Giants which is orange and black.
It’s quite interesting that some omiyage packages are designed to show the symbol of a city in Japan. Do you guys know other baseball teams that are popular with their colors?
