How to use ‘well’ in English
One day, a student came to ask me about the word ‘well’. She doesn’t know how to use it as it is similar to the word ‘good’. The word ‘WELL’ is basically an adverb and you can use it in different kinds of situation. Let’s see the use of ‘well’ below here.
1.You use it when you are satisfied with the things or in a good way, very much or to a great degree.
Your drawing has come out really well.
(絵が上手にかけましたね。)
The baseball game was terrible today. The batter didn’t hit the ball well.
(今日の野球の試合はひどいものだった。バッターが全くうまく球をとらえられてなかった。)
She has got a well-paid job.
(彼女は高給取りだ。)
He plays the piano well enough.
(彼は十分うまくピアノを弾ける。)
Knead the dough well. (very much)
(生地をよくこねてください。)
Can you sleep well?
(よく眠れますか?)
2.‘AS WELL’ which means ‘in addition’, ‘too’ or ‘also’, is usually use at the end of a sentence.
Invite Sarah. And Kenny as well.
(サラを誘って。あとケニーも。)
I want to cook spaghetti as well as lasagna.
(ラザニアと一緒にスパゲッティを作りたい。)
I like to go to the concert as well.
(私も一緒にコンサートに行きたい。)
3.Making suggestion ‘MIGHT/MAY AS WELL’
For example:
She might as well be the best person to go to the concert with.
(彼女は、コンサートに一緒にいくのにぴったりの人かもしれない。)
We don’t know anyone here. We might as well leave.
(ここにいる人は全員知らない人だ。帰ったほうがいいかもしれない。)
You have to be careful because It is not the same as ‘ might/may also’. The meaning of ‘might/may also’ is possibly in addition.
For example:
Before you go hiking, buy yourself a good pair of boots . You may also need to buy thick walking socks.
(ハイキングに行く前に、ちゃんとした登山靴を買いなよ。厚手の靴下も買ったほうがいいかもしれないね。)

4.Some can be use as idioms such as well done, all is well (everything is fine), well-known (famous).
5.Well is used as an adjective.
For example:
She doesn’t look well. (not healthy)
(彼女は調子が悪そうですね。)
I hope you get well soon.
(早く良くなるといいですね。)
6.Well is used as an exclamation to introduce something you are going to say or to continue a story.
Well, what shall we have tonight for dinner?
(さぁ、夕飯は何を食べよう?)
Well, I think it is a good idea.
(そうですね、それはいいアイディアだと思います。)
